A Tree Called Tebe

“I like to think Yah creates song through me making me a co-creator.” -Tebe Zalango

Trees grow. Growth is a sign of life. Trees circularly, upwards, and outwardly extend themselves and emit these gases that also give life. What of it? This revolution is ancient af is what. No telling how long people been observing nature while participating in it. Full participants in nature become as trees. They expand upwards and outwards, emitting sounds and colors that rival that of Alabama Shakes.

Mix a little freestyle with the written, why not? Croon a little R&B diddy over Antonio Vivaldi, sure. Tebe Zalango was a young, classically trained musician slicing Amadeus’ Violin Sonata No.18 in G major over cafeteria table thumps at lunch hour as the freestyles flows rang out. It mattered less what he said but Tebe was spitting raw since he kstatewrote his first rhyme in the 7th grade. This mattered less to Tebe when he became conscious of his past from a cultural and historical construct.

Gun bars turned sunrays and his music reflected the movements of his people that he became to love deeply.  Tebe Zalango would travel out from Decatur, Illinois to raise vibrations around the world and feel them too. What of it? Tebe Zalango means shield, protector and life giver is what.

Over 20 years of experienced musicianship, reading sheet music and composing well-structured, 90s R&B inspired songs is enough to bend the back of the greatest artist. Greatness however is much like growth in being an attribute of trees. Even the smallest pine is ‘great’ and strong enough to sail you to safety or rock you to sleep on your grandmother’s lap.

Tebe is also a producer, mixing raw hip-hop, Spoken Word, and violin for a cerebrally divine experience at each performance. In a recently warm, wintery interview, Tebe told The Black Freq Sheets, “I’ve travelled the world with my craft…it means everything to me.”

Life means er’thang to most or there is usually a problem. Tebe’s life is giving life to the extent he takes comfort in charity and nature. Of course he finds home in nature. All trees do. “Creatively I’m inspired by nature and watching the ocean, mountains, listening to birds in different regions, or seeing a beautiful woman perfect her moves on a ballet pose,” he mused. “⌈One time⌋ I heard the birds sing in the mountains of Lalibella, Ethiopia and it ⌈spoke⌋ to my soul.”tebemic

Of course there is music. Music is one of Tebe’s biggest inspirations. “I like going to live concerts, reggae or soul and feeling the base from the speakers. I like reading a good book or listening to a dope lecture by a well-researched scholar, or hitting the gym.” Not exactly the most singularly thematic list. Tebe continued, “At any given moment I get inspiration at some of the most random things.” Sounds like the kind of man to eat a grape off a woman’s butt cheek she’s been balancing for the last 12 minutes while watching him perform Vivaldi’s Four Seasons in between bars of hot fire.

Follow Tebe Zalango’s finely, divinely gifted & talented ass at zalangomusic.com and look out for his forthcoming album, The Flow of The Nile, and don’t consider life without this giving force of nature. “I make songs for the greater good so Yah always inspires my heart to sing, or to speak poetically. I just want to do my part in leaving an imprint on life for the positive.” TBFS can dig it. Can you? If so, then be sure to stay (in) tune with the sway of the trees against the recycled winds of change. “If it’s falling in love or being an example of love to a community, I cover it. If its pastors pimping in the pulpit or artists pimping themselves and our youth for material gain, I cover it. It’s all about awareness and making a difference,” Tebe added.
