This isn’t Mike Pence VP speech grade thud but we could see how it could make a dent:
Transgender women in Africa have benefited from “male privilege” because they grew up as men. -Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
This is not all a dream… The Black Freq Sheets just wanted to know…
WTF is up with the plurality of feminisms and the plethora of pink pussy politics popping around this mofo?
The textbook definition of feminism has evolved as much as our personal ones. Literary scholars and even the ‘media’ shouldn’t shoulder blame for the confusion in the use of the word.
It has always been up to the individual self to define itself. Perception is reality, after all. At least that’s what they say.
And after all, we live in a world tried, tested, and virtually inundated by the delusion of white male supremacy. Whatever feminism means or used to mean to anyone on any particular point on the globe is inevitably evolving due to the awakening of minds and freeing of hearts from that delusion.
In South Africa for instance, white women were and to a large degree, still are considered to be perhaps less equipped than there male counterparts but their humanity is intact, unlike non-Europeans that are viewed as non-humans by purveyors of white male supremacy.
It is a special ugliness when a non-European holds the belief that they themselves are non-human. It is a perverted self-hate that ensues. To a woman in South Africa, feminism may mean merely exercising ownership of ones body or mind. The definition of feminism may not span any political scope in South Africa yesterday or today, though passion be the same.
Why is it is that everyone is always at the ready to surrender power to those they deem incompetent, is an unsolved mystery. We gargle and spit language in this country and wonder, ‘Why all the hostility?’ Words never stopped mattering and The Black Freq Sheets are walking the razor edge ‘tween direct confrontation of bullshyt and rightfully dividing truths for mass consumption.
In case there’s still a question, feminism is whatever it is to you. There won’t be any offering of a stoic, beige definition of what it means to be your divine self. Mother Goddess & Divine Gardner, Alice Walker has a few good ones if you must.
An expansion of whatever flavor you choose these days, however Walkerian or personal, it would have to include transgender and female identifying members of our population according to a bravely emerging perspective. We are careful not to call this mindset ‘new’ though we may be investigating the topic for the first time in such a public way. Transgenders overwhelmingly insist that Women’s Rights encapsulates those of people born identifying as female.
Conversely, women, activist, and Women’s Rights activists are reactively contending the imposition that transgenders share an equal stock and in fact, pose a threat to the entire cause. Women are indeed more than a vagina. If the physical appearance of femaleness affords transgender females women’s rights than what about all those male rights that happened before the incision?
Does that mean they owe? 0-O
This may sound a bit sudden and all too dramatic but the argument that transgender inclusion gives license for governments to ‘blur the lines’ when it comes to traditional women’s rights hits hard. The fear is including transgendered female rights in Women’s Rights would allow world governments to erase ‘sex-based legislation’ all together. Fear became reality in the 2015 Parliamentary Women and Equalities Committee Report in London and we all know how much America looooves Europe.
I think if you’ve lived in the world as a man with the privileges the world accords to men, and then switched gender, it’s difficult for me to accept that then we can equate your experience with the experience of a woman who has lived from the beginning in the world as a woman, and who has not been accorded those privileges that men are.
-Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
